A compassionate priest from Gravatá, Pernambuco, Brazil, has gained recognition for his dedicated efforts in rescuing and caring for stray animals.
Father João Paulo, reflecting on how his mission began, recounted, “Animals have always held a special place in my heart. After arriving in Gravatá, I was approached by members of a local NGO dedicated to caring for street animals, who were selling cookies. My support extended beyond a mere purchase; I started advocating for their cause within my church.
I discovered that they were caring for about 100 animals in subpar conditions. This spurred me to promote adoptions through various means, especially by incorporating the animals into church services and organizing adoption fairs right outside the church.
Even after the NGO ceased operations, I continued to work closely with some of its ex-members. We collaborated with universities to launch sterilization programs for animals, using facilities provided by the church. I have also provided assistance to many people facing serious health challenges. Several animals were sheltered at the rectory and later adopted. Three of these animals have become cherished members of my own family.
In response to a question about how many animals he has saved, he modestly stated, “I haven’t rescued them; they’ve rescued me. Every day, I grow more convinced that they’re divine blessings sent to enrich our lives, teaching us to be kinder and more humane. Adopting animals isn’t a chore; it’s a source of pure love. Often, they sense my sadness and stay by my side. I have no regrets in embracing these gifts from God. I’ve pledged to care for them until my last breath. Anyone who wants to be part of my life must accept my family too, as they are essential and irreplaceable.” He regards these animals as heavenly sentinels, fostering empathy and affection in humans.
Addressing the overwhelming issue of dog abandonment worldwide and particularly in Brazil, Father João Paulo advocates adoption as the ideal solution. Recognizing that not everyone is in a position to adopt, he offers alternative ways to help: donating food, offering temporary homes, volunteering to walk dogs, and backing individuals who have adopted. His strategy represents a comprehensive effort to promote animal welfare.
Responding to objections regarding the presence of animals in the church, he noted that affection for animals is frequently misinterpreted as irrationality. He remarked, “Our devotion to animals is often dismissed as insanity. It’s sadly typical to encounter views like ‘caring for people is more important.’ Yet, there is no animal love that doesn’t extend to fellow humans. To hearts preoccupied with wealth, power, and self-interest, any form of love might seem like madness. But what a blessed madness it is to love! I am profoundly content to be considered mad for cherishing life in all its manifestations.”
In the last four years, Father João Paulo has persistently advanced his efforts in animal welfare, tackling increasingly challenging situations and aiding adoption initiatives. Simultaneously, he has extended his compassionate endeavors to caring for the ill in a hospital setting. He states, “My commitment to animal welfare remains steadfast, as I support individuals and groups dedicated to adoption. I’m now engaging more actively in cases that require urgent attention through various campaigns and support. Alongside this, I’ve also dedicated myself to attending to the sick in a hospital.
Father João Paulo expressed gratitude for the pivotal role played by a previous article in Bored Panda in highlighting his endeavors with street dogs. He elaborated on his continuous efforts to aid these animals, emphasizing his inclusive approach and care strategies.
“I want to emphasize how crucial the Bored Panda article has been in bringing attention to my work with dogs. While it’s not feasible for me to shelter every street dog I encounter, I’m committed to providing them with support. This includes allowing them access to the Church and ensuring they have food and water available around the clock at both sides of the temple. Additionally, I personally oversee the treatment of those suffering from severe illnesses.”
